Training an animal, human or other, is a matter of arranging connections among events (stimuli and responses) with outcomes (reinforcers or punishers), and doing it in a way that those connections lead to an enduring modification of behavior. In the academic literature the process is called association or conditioning, and elsewhere learning. It involves both the conditions of training and the conditions of motivation that will bring these connections alive.
